A new survey by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) reveals that 72% of nurses have witnessed patient safety incidents directly linked to unsuitable care environments, such as trolleys in corridors. The survey, conducted during a period of severe overcrowding, highlights concerns about falls, medication delays, and compromised patient care in emergency departments, waiting rooms, and other non-clinical areas. Nurses overwhelmingly call for increased bed capacity and staff recruitment to address the issue.

Seven in 10 nurses have seen patients' safety be negatively impacted by being treated on a trolley, a new survey has revealed.

These safety incidents include falls, medication and treatment delays. Of all respondents, 84 per cent said they have cared for patients in inappropriate settings like Emergency Department corridors, waiting rooms, ward porches and treatment rooms within the last year. This survey was carried out from January 19–31, a period when over 6,395 patients were admitted to hospital without a bed. INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said nurses are reporting “huge ethical concerns” with the constant placing of patients in inappropriate settings such as window bays and waiting rooms.

Ms Ní Sheaghdha added that nurses feel let down by management who are doing “very little to address workload and safety concerns”. She said: “The feeling amongst our members is that patients are being treated as mere numbers, despite the objections raised by those working on the frontline.
