In 2021 around 614,000 people in Northern Ireland held an Irish passport.
Irish passport holders are being advised to check their passports are up-to-date ahead of the summer rush.
For a 'simple adult renewal', the turnaround time is 10 working days for online applications, while first-time passport applications can expect a wait of 20 days. The ITAA has reminded travellers that most non-EU destinations require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date.
"Ahead of the summer holiday season, my big message to everyone is: check your passport is in date now. I would advise all citizens, including first time applicants, to apply using Passport Online. The Passport Online service offers Irish people the ability to apply online for their passport 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Online applications are processed faster than postal applications. Applications through the post have a waiting time of at least eight weeks and you also need to factor in postage delivery times.
