Concern as Irish patients face two-year wait for generic cancer tests
The Irish Cancer Society says it is “concerned” that people are waiting for up to two years for routine cancer genetic testing.
The longest waiting time is for re-referrals, patients who were referred to the service, seen in a clinic and then re-referred. It takes 1,197 days for this cohort to get an appointment. “Genetics services have a valuable role in helping people understand their risk of cancer and for their medical teams to advise on the best next steps for them,” she said.“Over many years, the nurses on our Support Line have heard about the stress and anxiety that long delays to cancer genetic testing have caused them and their families.
