Dan Whelan, from Enniskerry, Co Wicklow, is poised to take on the role of the primary punter for the Green Bay Packers
It has been almost 40 years since an Irish-born player competed in the NFL - but that could change by the end of this season.
Adding to the unexpected turn of events, the Packers made a surprising move on Monday by parting ways with punter Pat O’Donnell. Whelan was born to an Irish family in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow. When he was 13 years old, his family relocated to California. They established their new home base in Palm Springs, where Whelan attended Rancho Mirage High School.
