Irish Pub Owners Unaffected by Lidl's First Irish Pub

While Lidl has received permission to open a pub in its Dundonald store in Northern Ireland, Irish pub owners in the Republic aren't worried about losing business. Industry experts say it's very difficult for supermarkets in Ireland to obtain the necessary planning permission to open a bar on their premises.

Irish pub owners aren’t concerned supermarkets could be taking their business as Lidl is set to open its first boozer on the island. The High Court in Northern Ireland has granted the retailer permission to open a pub in its Dundonald, Co Down store.

As the price of pints continues to rise, pub owners in the Republic have been vocal about the struggles to keep their doors open. However, they aren’t too concerned that supermarkets will take their business in the future. Industry experts say it isn’t impossible for a grocery shop in Ireland to get permission to open a bar on its premises, but it’s very difficult. A source said: “The biggest difficulty with a supermarket trying to do this in the Republic would be securing planning permission. Based on the current process governing licensing it would be really challenging for them to get this approved. “Also, given the long-term, sustained decline in the number of pubs in this country, plus the current high cost of doing business in hospitality, it would be very surprising to see a supermarket try this in the Republic. “I don’t think anyone here would be worried about it because based on the current planning laws getting a pub into a supermarket is very hard, not impossible, but hard.” The proposed pub in Lidl’s Dundonald store, which is 10km from Belfast, will feature both bar service and off-sales which aims to create a "vibrant atmosphere" for the community. However, Lidl has yet to confirm when the new pub will be built, or an approximate opening date.
