Renters in Ireland paying twice as much for room than many other European capitals
Struggling renters are paying twice as much for a room than in other Euro capitals such as Brussels, Berlin and Vienna.At the same time, the numbers that have no place to call home are being grossly under-reported, with the real homelessness numbers revealed to be closer to 20,000.
The country’s biggest union has presented the research to show how ordinary workers are struggling to make ends meet because of the crisis in housing. SIPTU’s work on Dublin is part of a series of reports being compiled for different cities and counties, which can be followed in the Irish Mirror over the coming days and weeks.SIPTU Economics Researcher, Michael Taft, told the Mirror this can be done by local authorities getting back into the business of building houses and then renting them out to tenants at cost.
