Anyone convicted of murder, espionage, treason, terrorism, or collaborating with Israeli forces could be put to death – although no one has been executed since 2004.

But speaking to the Irish Mirror, a former Irish Defence Forces and security expert warned a “show trial” could also end up playing out.

Mr Power, who once served in Lebanon, added he fears the motive for the attack and those who planned it, may never be known. Private Rooney, who was from Co Donegal, was killed and three others injured on December 14 when their United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon vehicle was attacked near Al-Aqbiya village in the country’s south, a Hezbollah stronghold.
