Members of the 123 Infantry Battalion fired three Javelin missiles as part of a final exercise for the mission
Irish soldiers test fired the Defence Forces’ most expensive weapons on Thursday – ahead of a dangerous peacekeeping mission to the war-town Middle East.
It is a key element of the battalion’s so-called force protection system – and can only be deployed on the orders of commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Stephen Mac Eoin. They will work out of Camp Shamrock near the town of At-Tiri, while a detachment of around 40 men and women will also be deployed to UN Post 6-52 – which is right on the so-called Blue Line, the de facto border between Israel and Lebanon.
More than 1,200 Israelis were killed in that attack – and some 3,000 Palestinians suffered the same fate in an onslaught of revenge.
