New research from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland reveals alarming trends in the mental health of Irish teenagers. The study found a significant increase in suicide attempts and suicidal ideation among adolescents, potentially linked to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
New research has identified worrying trends in the mental health of Irish teenagers, including an increase in suicide attempts, which is possibly linked to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition, 29 per cent of adolescents described their mental health as "bad" or "very bad" with almost four in 10 reporting self-harming at some stage.The study also found a strong predictor for all types of mental health issues including suicide attempts and suicide ideation was having a non-cis gender identity – teenagers who declared themselves transgender or non-binary.
Other significant risk factors for having poor mental health were having an ethnicity other than white-Irish, household financial deprivation and the effects of Covid-19 on family and personal relationships. The results of the survey by researchers at the RCSI’s Department of Psychiatry, which are published in the Irish Journal of Psychological Medicine, also found 29 per cent of respondents had reported a clinically relevant psychotic-like experience in the previous six months which was more than double the prevalence rate in previous studies.
