The fast-moving wildfires ripped through the historic city of Lahaina and so far the death toll rose to 93 at the weekend
An Irish woman living on the Hawiian island of Maui - where wildfires have so far claimed 93 lives and destroyed a historic town - has told how she and her young daughter had to evacuate their home with only their passports and a change of clothes.
“By 8pm we could see the large fire growing about seven miles away from our house in south Maui but again did not know how serious it was,” Eileen told us. "A great friend who lives in Kihei and wasn’t alerted to evacuate text to go stay in her Ohana with another family of friends who live in Maui Meadows too.
“It was eerie, residents in Maui go to sleep early and to see people in the cars and lights on in homes at 12am was not normal,” she recalled. “What was the point in panicking them too? Deep down I was scared but focusing on the ‘what could happen’ would not help anyone.
