Officials hope that a 21-year-old plan for a indoor aquatic center in Mobile could be coming off the shelf. 🏊
Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson, in a nightly newsletter this week, said the region “desperately needs more places for our youths to participate in swimming.”
Mobile, on the other hand, is watching as some of its existing pools close. A local YMCA closed one of the city’s few indoor pools a few years ago during a “restructuring” of its activity center. Hudson said she was “grateful” for the city’s funding. She said she hopes it serves as a “catalyst” in getting the project funded.
Birmingham also has a competitive aquatic center that was utilized for events during the 2022 World Games. The events were held inside a natatorium that can hold more than 1,400 swimmers, coaches and fans. The indoor venue is within the multi-purpose CrossPlex, a $46 million project that was completed about a decade ago.
Former Mobile Mayor Sam Jones, who held that position from 2005-2013, said the city once contemplated building a multi-use Sportsplex on Rangeline Road in Tillman’s Corner. The Great Recession in the late 2000s scuttled those plans, he said.
