This article explores the growing trend of elaborate beauty routines and pre-sleep rituals, questioning whether this obsession with looking flawless might be impacting our sex lives. Drawing on personal observations, expert opinions, and global studies, the article examines the potential link between time spent on beauty routines and decreased sexual activity.

With the rise of elaborate skincare routines , pre-bed rituals and ‘#morningshed’ trending on TikTok, Sarah Finnan investigates how modern beauty standards are impacting our sex lives . I find myself drawn to videos of people doing mundane things, like cooking, cleaning, or getting ready for bed. There's a certain appeal to watching the monotony of their daily routines, the ASMR of products being opened and closed a soothing balm for the soul. It's perplexing, though.

Half the time, I couldn't be bothered to wash my own face, yet I'll happily spend an evening engrossed in someone else's nighttime rituals. One Instagram creator I constantly encounter, though I don't follow her, has a signature routine. Every video showcases her meticulously planned morning, involving hairbands for lymphatic drainage, collagen masks, vibrating exercise machines, a plethora of vitamins and supplements, a brisk walk with her husband, and an at-home Pilates workout. All this before 6 am! Then she adds an everything shower, red light therapy, and a full face of makeup before heading to her 9-to-5. Her life is a world apart from mine, yet I can't look away. At night, I consume endless TikToks of women prepping for bed. The 'uglier you go to sleep, the hotter you wake up' mantra plays out as they apply serums, tan their faces, and coil their hair around socks. Come morning, I'm back for the reveal, hypnotized by the peeling, washing, and removing of all the products. If you're online as much as I am, you've likely heard of 'morning shed,' the term describing the process of taking off everything applied the night before. From velcro rollers and silk bonnets to chin straps, lip tints, wrinkle patches, and spot stickers, going to sleep has never been so complicated. These creators, mostly women, look phenomenal – lips perfectly pink, skin plump and hair perfectly coiffed – but it takes a lot to wake up like that. I can't help but wonder, isn't this impacting our sex lives? This question has been on my mind ever since reading an article a couple of months ago. Journalist Serena Smith writes, 'There's certainly something decidedly unerotic about the way wellness and beauty culture is heading.' And she's right. Our beauty routines have become a non-negotiable part of our evenings, often at the expense of time spent with a partner. While Irish data is scarce, a global sex habits report cited by Smith states that Gen Z is having sex only three times a month. Does this indicate a sex recession? A 2021 study in The Journal of Sexual Medicine found the pandemic caused a small but significant decrease in Americans' sexual desire, pleasure, and frequency. Similar findings were echoed in the UK's National Surveys of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal), which found a consistent decline in the average number of sexual encounters per week. Psychologist and health promotion specialist Dr. András Költo from NUI Galway agrees with these trends. He cites international studies conducted in Europe, Canada, and Central Asia, showing a decrease in adolescents reporting sexual activity. Dating coach Frances Kelleher hasn't noticed a direct correlation between elaborate beauty rituals and a decline in sexual activity in Ireland. She observes, however, that women who don't spend excessive time on their appearance tend to find relationships more frequently than those who do. Regarding the current trend of sex frequency, Kelleher believes we are actually having more sex
