The veteran wide receivers test their injuries during individual drills – together for the first time in a long time – but playing vs. Kansas City is uncertain

COSTA MESA — Keenan Allen smiled broadly Wednesday when asked if he might play Sunday night against the AFC-leading Kansas City Chiefs at SoFi Stadium.Mike Williams laughed when asked the same question.Allen and Williams, the Chargers’ top wide receivers, tested their hamstring and ankle injuries, respectively, during individual drills in practice – together again for the first time in a long time.

Williams sustained a high ankle sprain in the Chargers’ loss to the Seahawks. His absence, when combined with Allen’s and that of Jalen Guyton , left the Chargers shorthanded at wide receiver, with Michael Bandy, DeAndre Carter and Joshua Palmer moving up the depth chart. By the end of the Chargers’ loss Sunday to the San Francisco 49ers, the Chargers were without 15 key players who had suffered significant injuries, including Allen and Williams. By the time they took the field Wednesday for practice, there was a glimmer of hope.
