Does this curious spot mark the dividing line between Northern and Southern California?
Few people seem to be able to agree on where the dividing line between Northern and Southern California lies, or if it exists at all.
There's certainly no official delineation between the two. Pages of dormant internet forums reveal a breadth of opinion on the matter. Some say it's San Luis Obispo. Others say Fresno. Some say there is no line as Central California must be considered its own region, while others say the entire Central Valley is in NorCal.Around 10 miles north of Fresno on state Route 99, two trees stand in contrast next to each other in the median — a palm and a pine.
Colloquially known as"Where the Palm Meets the Pine," the pine marks entry into foggy northern California, and the palm entry into the state's sunny southern half. The location in the San Joaquin Valley is just 45 miles southwest of North Fork, a spot officially named as the"Exact Center of California."
Unlike the North Fork spot, the odd couple of trees that sit on Highway 99 have no plaque or marker. In fact, sightseeers can only get a glimpse of them while flying by in their cars, as there's no access to the median or pull out. It has recently, however, earned a"Historic Marker" label on Google Maps.The juxtaposition of the two species of tree is nothing too peculiar in itself. As Bay Area residents know, a palm tree elegantly abutting an evergreen is a common sight.
