Greg RosensteinIslam Makhachev defeated Charles Oliveira via second-round head-and-arm choke to claim the lightweight belt on Saturday at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi. The Dagestani fighter, a teammate of MMA legend Khabib Nurmagomedov, has now won 11 fights in a row.
Makhachev reached the UFC in 2015 and has been dominant, utilizing his elite grappling skills to beat opponents largely on the mat with submissions and ground-and-pound. That’s exactly what happened in the main event as he took Oliveira down at will throughout the two rounds. After landing a right hook midway through the second, he took top position and sunk in the submission.
In the co-main event, Aljamain Sterling retained the UFC’s bantamweight title with a second-round TKO over former champion T.J. Dillashaw. Sterling dominated from the opening seconds, taking his opponent down multiple times and landing heavy ground-and-pound until the referee had enough. Dillashaw suffered an apparent shoulder injury that played a major part in the loss. After the fight, he said he “completely blew his shoulder out” in April and dislocated it often during his training camp for the fight. It popped out early in the matchup and he was in clear pain throughout.National
