Joe Biden last night announced a surprise plan with three phases: the first would be a six-week ceasefire, the second the return of remaining hostages, and the third a reconstruction plan for Gaza. We'll be bringing you all the reaction to this throughout the day.
Despite hopes being raised of a ceasefire deal, an expert has said they believe it is not particularly realistic. Samuel Ramani, associate fellow at RUSI, told Sky News that Israel's position remains that it wants to eradicate Hamas as much as possible. The US is 'increasingly' of the view this is not very likely, with a recent intelligence assessment estimating 35% of Hamas has been destroyed.
If Israel doesn't agree to the deal, he says, the US will have to decide whether it will continue to support Israel militarily. Joe Biden is 'under a lot of domestic pressure' and already saw two American officials quit the administration over his handling of the Gaza war. There is also dissatisfaction with Israel going ahead with a full-scale assault on Rafah. But Mr Ramani says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be wanting to cling on to his legacy.
