A ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants appears to have ended a shocking period of violence after a Islamic Jihad commander was killed in Gaza.
A ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants appears to have ended days of violence climaxing with the killing of a second Islamic Jihad commander in Gaza.
It followed the assassination on Friday of Tayseer Jabari, a senior leader of the militant group which is considered a terrorist organisation by the UK and more than 30 other countries. Israel launched the first strikes in what it described as a pre-emptive move to neutralise an immediate threat from the militants, who vowed revenge for the arrest of one of their leaders in the occupied West Bank.
The IDF said it regretted civilian deaths and vowed to investigate them them, while blaming militants for operating from civilian areas and using locals as ‘human shields’.
