The Israeli military operation in Gaza City resulted in the detention of a senior Hamas militant. However, the operation was detected by Hamas, leading to a subsequent Israeli air strike that caused casualties, including the death of at least four people, among them children and a woman, as reported by local medics.

According to Thawabta, director of the Hamas-run Gaza government media office, Israel then launched heavy air strikes, killing and wounding several people. António Guterres: ‘Superpowers need to understand things have changed’ Israeli media reported the raid may have been carried out by members of an Israeli-backed militia that operates from Israeli-controlled areas inside Gaza. Witnesses ‌said ‌Israeli warplanes fired at least 12 missiles near the Katiba area in the west of Gaza City, an area crowded with displaced families.

At least four people – including two children and a woman – were killed and several others wounded in the bombardment, medics said. Two vehicles were hit and reduced to twisted wreckage. Another child was killed in Israeli fire in central Gaza, medics said. The explosions forced many families sheltering in the ‌area of Gaza City to leave, including from a nearby kindergarten, residents said.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Israeli military said it struck several targets in the Gaza Strip in order to remove threats to Israeli security forces.

“This is our policy: we do not wait for threats, but rather pursue Hamas terrorists, thwart them, and destroy their terror infrastructure,” Katz said while visiting the Netiv HaAsara community near the northern Gaza border. In a separate incident, medics said a girl, Israa Al-Hissi, was killed and two other people were wounded when Israeli forces operating east of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza opened fire on the area.

A US-backed ceasefire that took effect in October 2025 halted the large-scale ‌fighting that had devastated the enclave, but it has not ended Israeli strikes. The military says such operations are intended to prevent attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups. More than 1,300 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire came into force last October, according to Gaza health officials.

Ireland Confirms Major Security Operation as It Hosts EU Defence Ministers Meeting During Council PresidencyIreland Confirms Major Security Operation as It Hosts EU Defence Ministers Meeting During Council PresidencyIreland's Minister for Defence and Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee has confirmed that a significant security operation is in place for the country's presidency of the Council of the European Union, following reports that Ireland was relying on French and UK defence forces for air and maritime cover. Speaking at a meeting of EU defence ministers in Co Wicklow, McEntee said Ireland had increased its defence spending by 43 per cent over the past two years and was investing in counter-drone technology, radar, air capabilities and a new maritime security strategy. EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas chaired the meeting alongside McEntee, with discussions covering the war in Ukraine, maritime security, space defence, the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz blockade. Kallas noted that Russia had escalated attacks on Ukrainian civilians in July and that air defence and missile interceptors were a top priority for EU support. On the Middle East, Ireland along with Spain and Austria proposed a new EU Common Security and Defence Policy mission in Lebanon following the end of the Irish UN mission, while Kallas acknowledged divisions among member states over action against Israel but reaffirmed EU support for a two-state solution.
