The Tonys are back in full force at Radio City Music Hall this June—and, as in the pre-COVID past, the cutoff date for award eligibility falls in late April which made this month an especially busy one for Broadway.

Mary-Louise Parker and David Morse both reprise roles that they played 25 years ago in, Paula Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize–winning memory play. It sees a woman called Li’l Bit reflecting on the years of sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her Uncle Peck .

In a new production of Ntozake Shange’s 1976 play—described as a “choreopoem” for its uncommon combination of poetry, music, and dance—director and choreographer Camille A. Brown has made movement an even stronger focus. “I plan to bring in as much of the Black-girl experience as possible,”last year. “So that’s everything from double Dutch to more formal modern dance. I’m 41, so I have 41 years of gestural information, emotion, storytelling, and life lived that I can put into this work.
