The message that made its way through athletic departments in Illinois after the name, image and likeness laws passed was clear: Schools cannot help facilitate NIL deals for their athletes.

After years of tumult, the inevitable happened last summer when the NCAA implemented a policy that paved the way for new state laws to allow student-athletes to make money off their names, images and likenesses. And local student-athletes already are seeing the benefits.

DePaul AD DeWayne Peevy introduces new men’s basketball coach Tony Stubblefield at Wintrust Arena on April 7, 2021. Peevy also noted a rise in student-athletes’ interest in business classes. DePaul now offers an entrepreneurship minor to help educate athletes as they pursue NIL deals. As athletes become more active as business people, the administration is expecting to see more of them enroll in the new minor.

DePaul guard Deja Church advances the ball as Texas Southern guard Ashley Austin defends in the first quarter at Wintrust Arena on Nov. 9, 2021. When the NIL law passed, everything shifted for Spivak, who was ahead of the curve compared with other athletes. By December, Spivak and 14 other athletes had deals with the WWE to be the first members of its NIL class.
