It’s not always easy, but getting out in the midwinter chill can be worth it, writes outdoors columnist Alli Harvey:
I finally got out on my cross-country skis last week. Over the past month as the snow fell, fell and fell some more, I’d layer up in the early morning to shovel out the driveway yet again. My husband and I were preparing to move out of our house, so the morning dig-outs served as a utilitarian workout.
I caught glimpses of the mountains in those calm moments where I had to drive from point A to B. There’s one section of the Old Glenn Highway that crosses the Matanuska River near downtown Palmer that always strikes me as dangerous, because the view of Pioneer Peak rising steeply over the river and valley floor is so breathtaking. I felt grateful for a fleeting glimpse of Alaska winter at its best as I drove.
I went outside to turn on the car. Again, I muttered as that pure, dry, farthest reaches of the earth kind of cold hit my cheeks, and then, brutally, the inside of my nostrils as I inhaled. I pulled up my balaclava and huffed indignant clouds into the air. The car took its time turning over; the temperature display sluggishly pixelated into view at minus 16.
Ice fog obscured then revealed mountains jutting steeply from the Valley floor in almost any direction I could turn.
