In our new series, our very own IMAGE mothers share their experience with baby feeding and how using a trusted follow-on milk felt like a useful tool in their mum arsenal.with both of my children, Luke and Lucy , and I felt confident choosing it.
It was already familiar within my family, as both of my sisters had used it for all of their children. Seeing it work well across several babies over the years made my decision straightforward and reassuring. Both Luke and Lucy took to Aptamil Advanced Follow On Milk really well and settled into it without any issues, which helped make those days a little easier for us all.
My decision not to breastfeed was a personal one, and at the time it felt like the right choice for my family and me. Having something that was already trusted within my family gave me added reassurance, and I always felt comfortable that they were receiving the nutrition they needed. I also have really lovely memories of both of them at feeding time.
They used to love their “bop-bop” beakers and would become so content and cosy once they had them. Looking back, those small moments feel very special now and having that consistency with Aptamil Advanced Follow On Milk was a comforting part of our routine as a family. I have been very lucky to breastfeed both my girls until they were 18 months old, and I don’t use the word “lucky” lightly.
A lot of things, many of them outside a new mom’s control, need to go right for that to happen. Because, while breastfeeding is miraculous and a joy-inducing bonding experience, it’s also hard. On your body, on your mind – the milk supply issues, the constantly ticking clock, the sore nipples, the painful latch, the burden of being a food source.
Aside from luck and lots of support, I think the reason I had such a fulfilling and prolonged breastfeeding journey was that I let myself off the hook. There are already so many pressures that come with new motherhood, and so I made a pact with myself that I would feed for as long as it worked for me, and that I didn’t have to be the only milk source, all the time.in the cupboard, a just-in-case option should I be delayed getting home or want an extra glass of wine while hanging out with friends.
It allowed me to relax when the opportunity arose, so even if I couldn’t make it back in time, I wasn’t having the sweat-inducing visions of my child screaming with a hunger only I could sate. We probably only used them a handful of times, but it made everyone’s lives easier; my babysitting parents felt like they had a practical tool in their arsenal should they need it, and it allowed my partner and me to order dessert after dinner without feeling the inevitable new-parent guilt too intensely.
I stopped breastfeeding my youngest only last month and looking back, I know that the Aptamil stash was a back-up that gave me the space to rediscover myself as a new mom, to enjoy the feeding time I did have with them and, ultimately, helped me extend my breastfeeding journey just for the pure joy of it.
