It will demand an iron will, but it’s not too late for Albanese to change track. |OPINION mrseankelly auspol AustraliaVotes

Each of these was a stupid and avoidable mistake. Together, they looked terrible, and Albanese deserved sharp criticism for his lack of campaign preparedness. But how can you determine the import of each for an actual Albanese government? This depends entirely on speculation.

Morrison, in his attacks right now, has two advantages. The first is that he has one clear attack. The second is that this attack plays to the media’s preference. The perverse difficulty for Labor is that the various government failings last week offered confirmation, not revelation.

Most troubling for Labor is that voters’ ignorance of its policies has left Albanese vulnerable to the government’s message he is negative. This may be what stopped Labor attacking as hard as it needed to last week. It is clearly caught between the many things it feels it should do: introduce Albanese, announce policy, attack hard but avoid seeming carping.Only so much can be achieved by either side in the five weeks that remain.

Some sharp choices will be necessary: a discarding of superfluous elements. Campaigns often resist change, worried about the message of panic it might send. The truth is most people will not notice. It is never too late to shift strategy, and there is no shame in it – certainly less than in heading to avoidable loss. Still, to make changes in the middle of a national campaign demands imagination, agility, self-belief and iron will. Whether Albanese has these we are about to find out.

Jacqueline Maley cuts through the noise of the federal election campaign with news, views and expert analysis.
