J.J. Spaun rides resilient mindset to win Valero Texas Open by two strokes

Dylan Frittelli looks over a bunker shot during Sunday's final round of the Valero Texas Open at the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course.Slipping out of the lead group at 10-under with a double bogey on the opening hole of the final round of the Valero Texas Open, J.J. Spaun said his initial reaction was to be “pretty upset.”

“You've only dreamed of playing there, for most of us,” Spaun said. “To think that we’re going to be heading there tonight or tomorrow is incredible. I'm looking forward to it and can’t wait. Hopefully, I can have another good week there, too.” Spaun briefly dropped to the Korn Ferry Tour, earning his tour card back when he finished tied for No. 2 on the leaderboard during his second start.

“That was one of the lucky breaks that you have to get to win,” Spaun said, “and it came at the right time.” Jones, who teed off six groups behind the leaders, matched the best round of the day at 6-under but posted bogeys on 11 and 16, missing two putts of less than 5 feet.
