Jacqueline Gold says it's a 'problem' to bring girls up to be 'helpful' as she talks feminism
Despite Jacqueline Gold CBE, 61, being estimated the 16th richest woman in Britain according to The Sunday Times Rich List, unbelievably, she is still stereotyped today simply for being female.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day today it seemed only appropriate to recognise the amazingly inspirational female, who, not only changed the face of Ann Summers and its reputation as a sex shop, but turned into the multi-million pound business that we know today. I even took my daughter, when she was five years old, to one of my speaking events. The corporate ones always tend to be male dominated but I wanted her to see mummy on stage and think this is normal, this is what women do.I think there’s two things. The first is how we are with our female colleagues, particularly if you work in a male dominated environment. You often see in those environments that women are almost competing with each other and that’s not helpful.
I think it will change if we can address the social conditioning. I remember years ago on holiday, my daughter was around six and she was on a lilo and two other kids were pulling her round the pool. My husband goes "my god look at Scarlett, she’s got them wrapped around her little finger" and I’m thinking maybe that’s a bit of leadership in her. We must sort of see the strengths in those traits and as parents see them as a positive.
Women can be very hard on themselves, especially when juggling work/family life. Are you ever self critical?
