The horror attack happened while he was playing with friends on a green area of Forgelands estate in Enniscorthy, Wexford on November 29, 2022.

The family of pit bull attack victim Alejandro Mizsan said “we are happy we got justice” as a man and woman charged in connection with the attack have each been jailed for two years.

On Friday, during the sentencing hearing of Karen Miller and Niall Byrne at Wexford Circuit Court, the court heard Alejandro will require intensive ongoing treatment and “suffers depression after the massive trauma.” Miller, who has six previous road traffic convictions, pleaded guilty to two charges of endangerment in relation to the pit bull attack Alejandro Mizzan, and a separate attack on another child four days earlier on November 23, 2022.

Miller later told gardai she had the dog on a lead but he was too strong and broke free. CCTV showed the dog roaming and going towards children. However, the actual attack was not captured on CCTV. Four minutes later the dog was seen on CCTV staggering and covered in blood. A medical report handed into court stated Alejandro suffered a complete tear opening from ear to ear, the complete removal of his lower lip and puncture wounds to both his thighs and his left chest.

“He lost his childhood,” they said. They also said he is going through trauma and pain. They also said Alejandro’s dad lost his job because he had to stay with him in hospital and mind him at home while the rest of them are still in deep shock and traumatised. Byrne later admitted to killing the dog. However, the court heard he did ask someone if they knew a farmer with a gun, which the judge said would have been more humane to do or to bring it to the vet to be put down humanely.

Mr Padraig Dwyer, SC, for Byrne said the dad-of-four apologises for the “utterances that day” to both Mr Millar and Ms O’Brien when he threatened them. “I cannot even begin to restore Alejandro to pre-attack life. It has a traumatic affect on the child and his family who lost jobs and expenses incurred,” the judge said, and expressed his sympathy to Alejandro and his family.
