James McClean has rejoined Derry City from Wrexham after 15 years away, but his return has not met his expectations. He made a late substitute appearance in a 4-1 win over Bohemians, his third appearance since revealing a chronic hip injury that once threatened his career. As an RTÉ World Cup pundit, McClean hinted at underlying issues, saying reality differs from pre-return conversations. Fans have criticized him online for seeming unhappy and self-centered. Despite the injury, he is optimistic about his fitness and future playing time.
James McClean made a historic move back to Derry City from Wrexham after 15 years away, but it doesn't seem to be meeting his standards.
He made his way off the bench in the final three minutes of the 4-1 win against Bohemians on Friday evening which was the first win in their last eight games. McClean has started once and made two substitute appearances since the announcement of his chronic hip injury that potentially could have cost him his career.
McClean is currently one of the pundits for RTÉ's World Cup coverage and when asked about if he was enjoying the switch by Tony O'Donoghue he said:“You know, you have a lot of conversations on the phone, and then you come home, and you quickly realise that what you hear on the phone is not what you see in reality.
“So yeah, there are a lot of factors that have contributed to that, and we’ll leave them for another day. ”He has been facing backlash from fans online with one stating: "He should have stayed with Wrexham and ran down what was left in his contract. He doesn't seem happy being back in Derry". Another called him out with: "Doing your club & its fans no favours!!
You're coming off very self centred regardless of promises over the phone. Show a bit of class man". Speaking on his hip injury he said: “Fitness generally is fine. Obviously it’s not ideal, but it’s in a lot better place than it was a couple of months ago.
“A couple of months ago, to be honest, I didn’t really know if I’d be back on a football pitch. The fact that I’ve got a few games in since then is obviously optimistic. ”
