The social media star and TV presenter will front a new documentary about masculinity in Ireland. Speaking to STELLAR at this year's Hayu STELLAR InstaStar Awards, where he acted as host, he let us in on what we can expect from the upcoming series. 'What Makes a Man' aims to explore the definition of masculinity, its evolution, and the challenges associated with it, through conversations with diverse individuals. The documentary also features James's personal introspection on the subject.
"They're the kind of conversations we need to have"The social media star and TV presenter will front a new documentary about masculinity in Ireland. Speaking to STELLAR at this year’s Hayu STELLAR InstaStar Awards, where he acted as host, he let us in on what we can expect from the upcoming series.
“I have a documentary coming out. It should be out between Christmas and New Year. It’s called ‘What Makes a Man’, so we’re exploring masculinity in Ireland. We’re going to be talking to lots of different people about what they think masculinity should be,” he explains.
“Is it a good thing, or is it a bad thing? Can it still be defined at all? Was it ever defined? ”“I put myself out of my comfort zone immensely.
There’s been tears already, which is exactly what we want.
“It’s a look at masculinity in Ireland as a whole. But it’s quite introspective for myself as well and how I would frame my own masculinity. So it’s something very different. I’m excited for it.
It’s very important to have those conversations. The documentaries on RTÉ are always so cool. So to be part of one is a real honour. ”Of course, we’re used to seeing a fun-loving side of James from his alter-ego Malahide Woman to his love of soaps.
However, this documentary will show a very “different light”.
“It’s definitely a different side to me. And talking to people who wouldn’t have the same opinions as myself, who don’t see the world through the same lens, is super important.
“They’re the kind of conversations we need to have to get a better understanding of everyone and to create a dialogue. You can see why people have landed where they’ve landed with their own views on masculinity at the moment. It’s such a hot topic. There’s a huge discourse around masculinity.
We want to showcase that it doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. ”“I’m back on The Today Show in two weeks, every Monday on the sofa down in Cork with Maura, Dáithí and Sinéad. I love doing it, it’s so much fun! ” he promises.
