During a big fall for both filmmakers, Jane Campion accepted the Prix Lumière from Julia Ducournau

, the first woman filmmaker to win a Palme d’Or , accepted the Prix Lumière in France’s Lyon on Friday night from Julia Ducournau, the second woman filmmaker to pick up Cannes’ prestigious top prize.

Turning to her fellow women on stage, she added: “But I hope you guys are telling the truth because it’s really a surprise and very moving to hear from the women here what the cinema has meant and I’m really thrilled. It has been my life and it has been my pleasure. Other guests included last year’s Lumière prize recipient Luc Dardenne, who shares the award with his brother Jean-Pierre, Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher , and American photographer Nan Goldin and Nadine Labaki , who read out poems in English and French by John Keats, the poet who inspired Campion’s penultimate feature film “Bright Star.”
