On her second shot at a directing Oscar, Jane Campion triumphed with her tense Western “The Power of the Dog.” Ms. Campion is the first woman to ever compete in the category twice. In 1994, she was nominated for “The Piano,” another movie involving obsession and mental torment in a stunning landscape.
At the time, Ms. Campion was only the second woman ever nominated for the directing Oscar. Since then, five other women have joined that club, including Kathryn Bigelow, the first to ever to take home the trophy andFor her first movie sinceMs. Campion adapted her screenplay from a 1967 novel by Thomas Savage. She set the stage for the psychodrama with a muted color palette, and the shadowy interiors of a Gothic homestead and barn.
Nearly three decades ago, Ms. Campion lost the directing award to Steven Spielberg and “Schindler’s List.” This time around, she bested Mr. Spielberg , along with Kenneth Branagh , Ryûsuke Hamaguchi and Paul Thomas Anderson .
