World number one tennis player Jannik Sinner has agreed to a three-month suspension following two positive drugs tests last year. The 23-year-old Italian, who won the Australian Open last month, will be banned from competing from February 9 until May 4. Sinner's positive tests were for the banned substance clostebol, which he claims was inadvertently ingested through his physio. While WADA initially sought a one to two-year ban, they accepted Sinner's explanation and imposed a shorter suspension, stating that athletes are ultimately responsible for the negligence of their entourage.
Sinner has reached a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency over two positive drugs test last year.
Advertisement In a statement on Saturday, WADA, which had appealed against the decision to clear Sinner to the Court of Arbitration for Sport , said it accepted Sinner’s explanation that he was inadvertently contaminated with the banned substance clostebol by his physio. “Based on the unique set of facts of this case, a three-month suspension is deemed to be an appropriate outcome.”
