Payne comes after the departure of Mike Prendergast.
After the position was initial vacated by Mike Prendergast back in February, Roger Randle was hired to fill the void. Mr Randle had been accused of raping a woman while touring South Africa as a player in 1997.
He was initially charged with rape, but the case did not go forward as the complainant dropped the charges.a string of ex-Munster players that included Billy Holland, Killian Keane and Mick O’Driscoll resigned from the province’s Professional Games Board over the hiring process of Randle, with Munster backtracking on the appointment following the furore. It is believed that Payne was in the running for the position at the start of this year.
He has previous experience in coaching as defence coach for Ulster, interim head of Clermont Auvergne and defence coach for the Scarlets.
