Peter Maher has gone on trial charged with killing Jeanna at their family home

A man accused of murdering his wife"put her down constantly" during their marriage, a court heard.

Peter Maher has gone on trial charged with killing Jeanna Maher, 51, at their family home in Drumchapel on September 26, 2018.Jeanna's sister Margaret McCandless today gave evidence on the first day of the trial at the High Court in Glasgow. Prosecutor Steven Borthwick KC asked the 69-year-old if Asda worker Jeanna ever spoke about the"state of her relationship" leading up to her death.She went on:"That they did not like each other...just wee things that I would pick up.

"It was things that he would say to her. It was not worth her going out as she would have to come back."She could not voice an opinion. She was not allowed to go out, she was stupid, too old...do not do this, do not do that."The witness:"Constantly, but she could not break up her family.The murder allegation includes claims Maher repeatedly struck Jeanna with a mallet or similar item.
