The doc noticed that Paxman’s presentation of the student quiz had become “less exuberant”. To which the obvious question is: how could he tell?
Either way, there was no untoward ebullience as Paxman presided over last night’s decider between Bristol, in their first-ever final, and two-time winners Durham. “You’re all old hands at this so let’s just get on with it,” he said, brushing aside any boring formalities. The most amusing moments came when the students were conferring. Asked to identify a piece of organ music by the American composer Aaron Copland, one thought that it “sounds quite Germany… angry”, while Harold Hardrada, defeated at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066, was referred to as “that Norwegian guy”.There were rounds on the history of consciousness, rocket science, the, and new wave bands.
While there were no stand-out “characters” this year in the mode of past contestants Gail Trimble, Eric Monkman or Bobby Seagull, some students were repeatedly hot on the buzzers while others put on a good show of looking as if the answers were tantalisingly just out of reach. Leading throughout, Durham seemed to be cruising to victory before Bristol began a short-lived rear-guard action.
