IT’S scarcely hard to believe that 25 years ago Bobbyjo’s Grand National victory at Aintree ensured that Irish-trained horses avoided going a quarter of a century without success.
The bad news for his supporters is that he’s 13lbs more to carry and that Gold Cup was a fiercely run contest on deep ground that might just have left its mark. Just two weeks ago Slevin won at Fairyhouse on Intense Raffles and the Wexford man looks to have plenty going for him in today’s marathon 4m2f contest.
He had a spin over hurdles at the Dublin Racing Festival and arrives here a fresh horse that stays well and acts on the ground, although any improvement in conditions would also help.
