Sunday's meeting at Fakenham Racecourse was abruptly halted after Irish jockey Gearoid Harney sustained a head injury in a fall during the penultimate race. Harney, riding Micronormous, came down heavily after his mount slipped at the bend, prompting a medical emergency. The last race was canceled due to insufficient medical cover as Harney received treatment on the track before being transported to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

Sunday's meeting at Fakenham was abandoned after Irish-born jockey Gearoid Harney suffered a head injury in the penultimate race. Harney was riding the David Pipe-trained Micronormous in the Sky Bet Queen Boudicca Series Final Mares' Handicap Chase when his mount came down heavily after slipping at the the bend entering the back straight.

The horse galloped clear unhurt. The last race, scheduled for 3.50pm, had to be called off due to insufficient medical cover as Harney was treated on the track. "In the penultimate race on the final circuit there was a nasty fall on flat and a result of that a jockey hit the ground hard," said David Hunter, the clerk of the course at Fakenham. "He had to be dealt with by two doctors and two paramedic ambulances and when they stabilised him so he could head to hospital we were really up against it with the light that was left. "He needed doctors attending him and a paramedic ambulance, therefore we wouldn't have had enough medical cover because it was being used to treat him after his fall. "Gearoid Harney is the rider. He has suffered a head injury and was stabilised and sent off to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. It was important that we didn't set the ball rolling without enough time or light so it was the only professional decision we could make." Harney is 23 and is from Cork and has ridden 21 winners in the UK having mainly ridden in point-to-points in Ireland. The conditional rider had a narrow escape at Market Rasen on Friday after narrowly avoiding a serious accident while jogging on the track during a race. Harney, who went on to win the closing race on the card, was passed twice by the runners in an earlier race while running on the course wearing wearing headphones with his hood up and not seeing or hearing the horses coming. The stewards looked into the incident and reported: "Gearoid Harney, the rider of Micronormous, had fallen on the bend entering the back straight on the second circuit. After viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that there was possible interference resulting in Micronormous falling. Harney was unable to be interviewed following the incident and therefore the enquiry was adjourned till a later date."
