President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the 2024 White House race - putting an end to his reelection campaign after a disastrous debate with Donald Trump.
Biden, 81, faced pressure from his allies to step down after the June 27 TV debate, during which he gave incoherent responses, failed to challenge the former president's numerous falsehoods and trailed off frequently. A recent AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll indicates that around six in ten Democrats reckon Kamala Harris would excel as president. Conversely, about two in ten Democrats doubt her suitability, while another two out of ten admit they lack sufficient information to judge.
"He's shown that he's been very loyal to the president and the administration. And that, I think, could hurt him," Shurtleff said of Newsom. Newsom's also been floated as a possible substitute, especially after snagging a high-profile thumbs-up from George Clooney. The A-lister and hefty Democratic backer, in a New York Times piece, tipped Pritzker as a ticket contender.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has likewise been involved in discussions regarding Biden's potential replacement, despite stating he plans to continue his support for Biden as the nominee.
