The politics of war are very different from the politics of peace
Gaza might be the irretrievable blunder that will defeat Biden you can sign up here.
, so how might Biden react if there is a Russian military breakthrough? In Gaza, the relentless killing of Palestinians may at any moment provoke a violent reaction in the Arab and Muslim world, leading to some new variant on 9/11. It was an astonishingly direct attack on the Israeli leader, one that must have been cleared with the White House, which should mean that Biden is now prepared to use his very real leverage over Israel, in the shape of weapons supply and diplomatic protection, to force Netanyahu out of office and organise a ceasefire. Failure to do so will be seen as further damaging evidence that Biden’s reputation for lack of follow-through and ineffectuality is well deserved.
Another weakness of the Democratic establishment is that they spend much of their time trying to marginalise their activists as dangerous radicals, while the Republicans do everything to enthuse their core supporters. It may be that only recently the White House accepted that Gaza had become a serious election-losing issue among key Democratic voters. Biden’s and Netanyahu’s electoral interests diverged, leading to Schumer’s shockingly direct demand for the Israeli leader to go.
Decisions on who is “an extremist” and who is not will be made by a government whose senior ministers have denounced overwhelmingly peaceful protesters calling for a ceasefire in Gaza as taking part in “hate marches”.
