The longest-tenured Red Coat has worked Ohio State football games at Ohio Stadium since 1967.

Ohio State football is celebrating a century at the Horseshoe this year. In recognition of that, The Columbus Dispatch will be sharing special Ohio Stadium content throughout this week. The Ohio State Red Coat was manning his post at the southwest gate, and USC was on its way.

“We treat those people that come in there as visitors the way we want to be treated when we go to their place,” Austin said. “Other than not wishing them luck in the final score, we do everything we can to facilitate whatever their needs are.”As the longest-tenured Red Coat, it’s a mentality that has made this Austin’s “forever job.”He grew up in Columbus, graduating from Ohio State University as a marketing major in 1962, going to his fair share of games as a student.

When Austin started, it was “on-the-job training,” he said. Each game and each day would bring new assignments that had to be learned on the fly. One day it would be physically tearing tickets — putting a stub in his pocket for every 100 in order to keep count. Another, it would be staying alert to what Ohio State’s opponent needed, even while being kept at arm’s length.

That's why Scott Crites, a retired deputy sheriff who joined Austin's team, understood his duties ahead of his first year as a Red Coat. When he started, he remembers the south stands being put up every year and the scoreboard which required someone to climb a spiral staircase to manually register each touchdown, field goal and safety.
