The premiers didn’t get what they expected in new health\u002Dcare spending from the prime minister — but they probably didn’t expect they would.
Let’s hope the prime minister did at least insist that the new money is spent on health care — something that has not always been the case in the past.
It is at the lower end of what most observers forecast, but it was clear to anyone who has looked at the federal books that chickens have come home to roost after seven years of rampant federal spending. It’s not as if the system is deprived. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, health-care spending in Canada reached $331 billion last year — $8,653 per Canadian, or 12.2 per cent of GDP. That is higher than in all other countries in the OECD except the U.S., Germany and the Netherlands.
