Sound of Music: As the country music celebrates 20 years of performing and recording, John McNicholl reflects on his long-standing career in the spotlight and what he has learned
Yeah, it’s been a very fast 20 years. We’ve covered a lot of mileage and we’ve performed in so many places during those 20 years. It’s been great.Yeah absolutely, you work hard trying to gain something like this and now we kind of pick and choose our gigs. We perform in the areas we are popular in and we do functions abroad, so we’re away quite a bit.
With a career that spans 20 years, there’s obviously highs and lows. What would you say have been some of the highs you’ve experienced over the past two decades? Definitely, I would encourage young people starting out in the industry to have something else in the background because you can’t depend on the music. You need to have something else for income and we’re lucky we have a new place opening in Mayo, in June of next year, so that’ll be up and running for the new season. There are tilers and painters and all kinds of stuff going on there, but we’re not opening it until it’s right. As of now, we’re very happy with it and our function room is built on.
It’s about creating a unique experience as well. On our tours in Nashville every year we have simple things like little gifts on the chairs. We look after things like making sure everyone is on one flight and that kind of thing. It takes the pressure off for people and we stay in good hotels and have good coach companies. We make sure everything is covered from all aspects.Maybe in later years. We’ll have the house with the 80-seater cabaret show, so we’ll do lots more of that down the line.
