Opinion | John Morse: It’s the guns. And voters have the power to stop the next tragedy.
We need to start caring about gun violence“I never thought it would happen here” gets said, and believed every time there is a shooting. We need to stop that type of thinking. But our current gun laws guarantee it will happen “here.” It’s just a matter of time.
When the Sandy Hook shooting happened, I was serving as the president of the Colorado State Senate and immediately knew exactly what those twenty children and six adults went through as their lives were stolen. I was horrified. We were all horrified and it wasn’t just that twenty-six people died, that’s just the statistic — they had been slaughtered.
In Colorado, we passed five bills, including expanded background checks and limits on the size of magazines. The result of this legislation manifested with an enraged gun lobby and Sen. Angela Giron, and I were recalled from office ten months later. We, the people, are the leaders and always have been. While we may not have led lately, it’s time to lead now and when we do, the elected officials will follow. If we continue to invest in hope rather than leading, the elected officials will continue allowing these massacres to happen.
