John O'Dwyer, who led VHI for nine years during his three-decade-long career in the health insurance industry, has passed away at the age of 66. He died peacefully at the Beacon Hospital following an illness. Mr O'Dwyer served as the chief executive of VHI from 2012 to 2021. He began his career at VHI at the age of 17, worked his way up the ranks, and held senior positions at Bupa and Friends First before returning to VHI as its CEO .
His dedication and ability to unite people were acknowledged by the current CEO of VHI, Brian Walsh. O'Dwyer's vision, focus on customer service, and business acumen contributed to the membership growth, strong financial performance, and new opportunities for VHI. He will lie in repose at his family home on Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon, with the funeral mass to be held on Thursday in St. Joseph's Church, Terenure, followed by burial in Mount Venus Cemetery, Rathfarnham
