Even after so many years, there are still new things for John Williams and Steven Spielberg to discover about their collaborations.
He said he has asked NASA officials, but never received a satisfying answer. A flabbergasted Spielberg finally told him onstage: It’s just alien magic. “Well, uh…E.T. did it!” the filmmaker explained as Williams and the audience both laughed. “Where he comes from there is no escape velocity.”Spielberg pointed out how often Williams has to begin work before visual effects are complete, which means he often has to begin conjuring intense emotion from reaction shots of the actors and little else.
They showed the dinosaur revelation scene from this 1993 film, in which the visiting scientists discover for the first time that they aren’t visiting a theme park full of fossils and relics but instead are in the presence of living, breathing creatures that went extinct millions of years ago. “The brachiosaurus in this sequence wasn't even in the cut when John saw it,” Spielberg said. “Everybody was looking up at nothing. We had a large wire connected to a truck at the top of a tree, and we pulled the wire as if the brachiosaurus was eating from the uppermost branches. Then we cut the wires, so it would snap back. That’s what Johnny basically saw. They were looking at nothing.
Williams said his work is about tapping into the primal part of an audience’s mind. “Music is probably older than language,” he said. “Before we could speak, we would celebrate by moving, or dancing, or beating on a log or whatever. Or chasing our enemy with frightening [noises] we might make. Music is an old, old gift. An old part of our humanity.
