Johnny Depp’s multimillion-dollar US defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard has started in Virginia. The Pirates of the Caribbean star is suing his ex-wife for defamation over an op-ed she wrote in the Washington Post.
The article was published in 2018, with the title: ‘I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change’. It did not mention Johnny by name.
He has categorically denied the implication that he was violent towards his ex, and claimed that the allegations have made it difficult for him to get roles he once did. The measure ensures immunity from civil liability when it comes to statements regarding matters of public concern which would be protected under the US constitution’s First Amendment.The hearing is taking place at the Fairfax County District Courthouse in Virginia – despite the couple living in California – because the Washington Post’s online editions are published through servers located in the area.
‘As you may know, I’ll be in Virginia where I face my ex-husband Johnny Depp in court,’ she wrote last week.‘Johnny is suing me for an op-ed I wrote in the Washington Post, in which I recounted my experience of violence and domestic abuse.’
