Born in Banagher, Co. Offaly in 1945, the third of four children, Johnny and his family moved to Dublin when he was six years old. During the evenings after his homework was done, he listened to Radio Luxemburg and became an avid fan of the station’s folk program and a lifelong passion was born.

For the very first time, he witnessed the mobbing and screaming of fans as the Stones ran for the back door and their getaway car.
However, it wasn’t until the 70s that Johnny started writing his own songs. On a sunny August day, while sitting on a stone in the sun outside Kennedy’s pub in Doocastle Co. Mayo, came the inspiration to write his first song Long Before Your Time . It too reached number one, and one of Ireland’s greatest songwriters was born.
But eventually she agreed with the help of Johnny’s sister, and the couple married three years later in 1970, going on to have two children, Jonathan and Alice. In 2014, Johnny recorded his first album in over 10 years, called Basement Sessions 1 and it broke the top 30 in the album charts. “Not bad for a folky like me,” he joked.
