The 38-year-old captained Andy Farrell's side as their Rugby World Cup dream came to a heartbreaking end against New Zealand
Johnny Sexton has been linked with an Ireland coaching role just days after playing his final game in a green jersey.Sexton was comforted by his son on the Stade de France pitch following the 28-24 defeat to the All Blacks in the French capital.Reports over the weekend suggest Ireland assistant coach Mike Catt is set to leave the role after next year's Six Nations, with The Sunday Times reporting that his family has recently relocated to England.
That means Farrell could be on the lookout for a new backs coach and Sexton could come under consideration for the role. The Ireland head coach said after the New Zealand defeat that the inspirational spirit of Sexton can help Ireland return to challenge on the biggest stage. “I think a lot of our group are still learning and I said to the group in the changing room the reason they’re going to keep on learning is because of this guy sat beside me here,” said Farrell.“And the way that he’s conducted himself as a leader and as a player and the way that he’s shown the love of playing for Ireland will be remembered and connected to this group for many years to come.
“Through his example, the younger guys will keep on getting better and striving to be better, there’s no doubt about that.”
