Eddie Jones has been sacked as England head coach
The Australian spent seven years in charge of England after taking on the job in 2015 but was informed by theJones has lost his job after an underwhelming yearJones enjoyed great early success and guided England to Six Nations titles in 2016 and 2017, going the entire season unbeaten, before reaching the 2019 World Cup final, where his side suffered defeat to South Africa.
However, the decision to sack the 62-year-old comes after a disappointing 2022, in which England had six defeats, a draw and five wins, ending with a comprehensive loss to South Africa on November 26. Jones’ contract was due to expire after the 2023 World Cup, but following a review of the dismal Autumn Nations Series, the RFU has decided to take action.
New Zealander Warren Gatland had been linked with the post, but committed to a second term as Wales head coach on Monday following Wayne Pivac’s departure from that job.Steve Borthwick, who skippered England during a 57-cap England career, is now the overwhelming favourite to succeed Jones. He was appointed Leicester boss in 2020, and has overseen a startling transformation in the Tigers’ fortunes, highlighted by a Premiership title triumph last season.
