‘Not guilty’ — judge who flew Pride Flag in her courtroom is cleared of wrongdoing
Judge Rosie Speedlin Gonzalez successfully appealed disciplinary sanctions imposed on her for flying the pride flag in her courtroom.Bexar County Judge Rosie Speedlin Gonzalez has been cleared of disciplinary sanctions imposed on her for congratulating attorneys on social media and displaying the Pride Flag in her courtroom.
Now, a three-judge panel has overruled the commission and dismissed the disciplinary sanctions. In a 15-page opinion dated Jan. 30, the judges said the commission “failed to plead and prove” that Speedlin Gonzalez’s actions “constituted willful or persistent violations of the Constitution or the Code.”
In her own defense, the judge said that at a training session for new judges, she and other jurists were encouraged to commend good work by lawyers appearing before them. Still, Speedlin Gonzales stopped the kudos after being admonished by the commission. A Special Court of Review held a trial in Austin on her appeal of the disciplinary sanctions. Speedlin Gonzales testified before the panel in May.
