The 72-hour strike by junior doctors across England could be the worst yet for the health service, NHS leaders warned as hospitals postpone tens of thousands more operations and appointments today.

But he also warned that, unlike previous industrial action, there were no derogations and junior doctors are not required to inform employers about their intention to strike. He said: “This is likely to be the most disruptive set of industrial action days that we’ve seen all winter. Why is that? Well, it’s three days rather than just one day, it involves junior doctors that are a large part of the medical workforce and, of course, work in many healthcare settings, not just hospitals – general practice, mental health trusts and, of course, community settings too – and so it’s likely that we will see that extensive disruption.

The BMA is preparing for a long dispute having said it would be willing to reballot its members for further action when the strike mandate expires in August.
